Super Clásico en el Estadio Azteca: Victoria Centenario o Puro Mexicano?
Estadio Azteca is set to host arguably the biggest match of the season. El super clásico is the biggest and most intense rivalry in México across all sports. Club de Fútbol América contra Club Deportivo de Guadalajara será el partido más importante de la temporada.
Across all competitions, including friendlies, these two powerhouses have met 263 times. América leads the way with 99 wins, so you know they’ll be looking for the 100th. Chivas, on the other hand, have 82 wins under their belt and 83 times of these teams being inseparable. These teams have a long history, and it doesn’t look like the intensity will ever slow down. 263 games can be a lot to keep track of, so let’s take a look at the last 5 times these two met in official competition. Chivas has the edge with 3 wins, while América had 1. Las Águilas look to get their first win since March 12th, 2025, in the second leg of the RO16, where they thrashed Chivas 4-0. Chivas looks to keep their winning streak alive from La Clausura, where they beat América 1-0 with a single goal in the 41’ from Hormiga, who has recently left the club to join Olympiacos.
Las Aguilas aren’t coming into this match with the greatest form. A record of 2-3 in their last 5 games isn’t exactly the way you want to show up to a match of this caliber, especially with 3 straight losses. The bright side? Even after being dominated for 90 minutes vs Cruz Azul, America still fought back and nearly managed to salvage a point coming back from 4-1 with 2 goals in stoppage time to make it 4-3. You know they had all fans on the edge of their seats, and you know you can never count this team out even when the games seem far gone. Henry Martín and Brian Rodríguez lead the way in goals for the team with 3 goals a piece and left back Kevin Álvarez leading in assists; that left flank will be the side to watch for. With Luis Malagón still out with a torn Achilles, veteran Rodolfo Cota has stepped up big for Las Aguilas being their highest rated player on average with a 7.3, not bad for 39 years old.
El Rebaño Sagrado on the other hand are coming in great form winning 4 of their last 5 and drawing the other against Pachuca. One of the more impressive wins comes from a 5-2 win where they ran riot against a tough Xolos team. More recently an impressive 3-0 win vs Pumas saw a double from 20 year old rising star Santiago Sandoval that included a great well placed header and a rocket top bins, both goals leaving the keeper stunned. Goleadores Piojo Alvarado and Ricardo Marín each have 4 goals and Marín also having 2 assists makes them a dangerous duo to watch for.
Chivas was founded in 1906, and with their historic ideologies, they quickly became the ‘team of the people’. Most clubs operate by buying expansive foreign talent, but Chivas are strictly against it. They only field Mexican-born players to show that local homegrown/academy talent can compete with the rest of the world. So every Chivas game, every win, loss, or tie, is felt with pride by the everyday citizen. Club América operates in almost the exact opposite way. They aren’t afraid to spend big for international talent and actually embrace arrogance and excellence, with being the “villain” with their famous motto “Odiame Mas” (Hate me more).
Las Aguilas look to take back the lead on the table with a win, while Chivas look to keep their spot. With one point currently separating the two and America still with a game in hand, this game could get ugly fast. You can count on cards to go around for everyone and tons of conatos de bronco (near brawls). Being the biggest game with so much at stake, all 87,523 seats at Estadio Azteca will be taken, and the majority being America fans. Can Chivas overcome a stadium full of Americanistas and lead the way to their first championship since the 2017 Clausura, or will America reach la Victoria Centenario and possibly #16 for the club’s history?
Club America 2-2 Guadalajara Chivas was played in the Apertura - 9 of Liga MX 2026/27. Club America sit 1st in the table, while Guadalajara Chivas sit 4th.
