When looking at the fixture list before the season began, you would be forgiven for marking this one down as Chelsea’s easiest fixture. A guaranteed 3 points, right? Instead, Hull have started like a house on fire and now the game poses much more jeopardy than initially anticipated for the Blues. Be that as it may, Chelsea have been absolutely electric going forward this season, exemplified by their blistering 2nd half EFL Cup display against Leeds. Trailing at half time, Chelsea turned on the style to win 6-3 in a match that pretty much sums up their season so far. Who cares if the defence is leaking more than a ship that’s been attacked by the mythical sea-beast known as the Kraken, if they just outscore the opponent? (My uncle Martin was attacked by the Kraken one time and actually died, true story. He was telling me about it the other day over tea.) For as top heavy as Chelsea have been, Hull have been the opposite. As the only side yet to concede in the league this season, this one should be an intriguing watch as an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. The back 5 of Egan, Ajayi, Mendy, Coyle and Giles will have their work cut out for them if they’re to continue that record, with Palmer, Rogers, Pedro, Welbeck and Neto all in fine scoring form for Chelsea. The home side will be looking to build on Wednesdays cup display and make up for last weeks league defeat to rivals Arsenal. Hull will be keen to show that their cup exit to Sunderland was simply a fluke and continue their unbeaten league record as they continue to assert themselves as a Premier League team. These sides met last season in the 4th round of the FA Cup at the MKM Stadium in February, with Chelsea running out comfortable 4-0 victors. But 7 months on, this is a very different Hull team, so it’s hard to see it being that straightforward this time. Stamford Bridge, Saturday, 3pm. Will Chelsea become the latest victims mauled by the Tigers? Or will they manage to put them in their cage?
