Manchester United and Chelsea are both searching for their first victory of the season after frustrating opening weekends. United were beaten 2–1 by London City Lionesses, while Chelsea were held to a 1–1 draw by Aston Villa despite dominating almost every attacking measure and a beautiful goal by Lauren James. That makes this an unusually important game for both clubs so early in the campaign. United’s first competitive match under new head coach Eva Olid did not go according to plan. They conceded possession and midfield control to London City, fell behind through a Julia Zigiotti own goal and only seriously threatened after Simi Awujo and Monica Jusu Bah entered from the bench. Awujo’s stoppage-time goal made the score respectable, but the overall performance was flat, marking Eva Olid’s first game as United manager one to forget.⁠ Olid is attempting to establish a new identity after replacing Marc Skinner, but she has inherited a side in transition. Melvine Malard, Millie Turner and Leah Galton were among the notable departures, with Malard making the particularly awkward move to Chelsea. Andrea Medina, Monica Jusu Bah and Janina Leitzig were among United’s summer arrivals, but the squad remains reliant on established players such as Maya Le Tissier, Dominique Janssen, Ella Toone and Elisabeth Terland. Chelsea’s opening result was disappointing, but their performance was considerably stronger than the scoreline suggested. Sonia Bompastor’s side had 65% possession, 34 shots and 57 touches inside Villa’s penalty area, only to draw 1–1 following a Veerle Buurman own goal. Lauren James scored Chelsea’s opener with an excellent individual finish, yet not to be the winner.⁠ The former champions remain extremely deep across almost every position. Their summer recruitment included Katie McCabe from Arsenal, a controversial transfer depending on who you ask, Giulia Dragoni and former United forward Malard, adding further quality to a squad already containing Lauren James, Alyssa Thompson, Keira Walsh, Nüsken, Lucy Bronze and Naomi Girma. The major question is at centre-forward. Mayra Ramírez has been unavailable, while Malard recently suffered a knock in training. Bompastor said Malard should return relatively soon but could not provide an exact timeframe. Chelsea have historically dominated this fixture. Across the previous 20 meetings in all competitions, Chelsea have recorded 17 wins, United one and there have been two draws. Head-to-head record⁠ United’s only victory over Chelsea came in the 2024 FA Cup semi-final, when they won 2–1 at Leigh. They have therefore shown that Chelsea can be beaten there, but that result remains the exception. United cannot afford another passive opening. Chelsea frequently score early in this fixture, and conceding first would force Olid’s team to abandon the compact approach that gives them their best opportunity.
