Can Everton improve from their first game, or will newly promoted Charlton Athletic show they deserve to be in the WSL?
Scott Phelan’s time in charge of Everton has started poorly, as the team was on the wrong side of a 1 goal game away from home. Their opening match, against newly promoted Crystal Palace, ended in a 1-0 loss for the Toffees after Crystal Palace’s new signing, Lexi Lloyd-Smith scored the only goal of the match.
Everton used the summer transfer window to their advantage, signing goalkeeper Rylee Foster from NSL team Halifax Tides in Canada, right back Naomi Layzell joined from champions Manchester City, centre-back Hannah Silcock joined from newly promoted Birmingham City, from WSL2 side Leicester City they signed midfielder Jutta Rantala, as well as strikers Noémie Mouchon and Hannah Cain. From the A-League (Australian top tier) side Melbourne City they signed striker Holly McNamara.
Karen Hills’ newly promoted Charlton Athletic had the worst possible introduction to the WSL, losing 4-0 to Liverpool. Grace Fisk scored the first 2 of the game, with the first coming just 8 minutes into their WSL campaign. Vivien Endemann, one of Liverpool's summer signings, scored the third. To make matters even worse for the struggling home side, they gave away a penalty in the 90+5th minute which was scored by Cornelia Kapocs to end the game.
Over the summer, Charlton Athletic thoroughly boosted their squad in preparation for WSL difficulty. They signed goalkeeper Anna Koivunen from Djurgården, a damallsvenskan side. They also recruited from the A-League, signing right back Grace Johnston from Perth Glory, and midfielder Leah Davidson from Melbourne City. Ash Neville, who had previously spent 9 seasons in the right back position for Spurs, joined the side from newly relegated Leicester City. From Liga MX Femenil team UNAM they signed defender Leighanne Robe. Midfielder Emily Van Egmond also joined from relegated Leicester City. From London City Lionesses joined striker Paula Partido. Striker Lorena Azzaro also joined the side, on loan from Premiére Ligue side Paris FC.
These teams have played each other just once before, in the 2022/23 FA cup round of 16, a game in which Everton won 2-0. Kenza Dali, now playing for San Diego Wave in the NWSL, scored the opener, with Anna Anvengård, current BK Häcken player, scoring the second, confirming the win for Everton.
With this being just their second match, this is sure to be an exciting game, full of unknowns and questions for both sides. Can the Toffees give Charlton another heavy defeat, or can Charlton improve on their opening game?
