It’s been a difficult start to the Premier League season for Manchester United. Just 1 win in their first 4 games has left the Red Devils in 14th. Sundays controversial derby defeat to 10-man Manchester City was not the response Michael Carrick was hoping for after dropping points late on at Everton. Pro Ref has issued an apology for incorrectly allowing Erling Haaland’s winner to stand, but that will not be much consolation for United. Despite the rough start in the league, United got off to a flying start in Europe, marking their Champions League return with a 4-0 demolition of Azerbaijani champions Sabah. They’ll be hoping to maintain their cup form here against a Brighton team who have scored more league goals than anyone else this season. Fabian Hürzeler’s men have been electric this season, and moved to 5th in the league table after making light work of their trip to Coventry on Sunday. It will be a tough test for United to get revenge on the team who knocked them out of last season’s FA Cup in the 3rd round, also at Old Trafford. That game will no doubt be on the players minds heading into this one. Despite that cup loss, United did the double over Brighton in the league last season, with a 4-2 home win in October and an impressive 3-0 away win on the final day in May. In terms of team news, Luke Shaw is a doubt for United after he missed Sunday’s derby, while Carlos Baleba is still unavailable to face his old club. Amad Diallo, Matthjis de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte all remain on the sidelines as well. For Brighton, they’re still without several players including Kaoru Mitoma, Mats Wieffer, Jack Hinshelwood, Yakuba Minteh and the yet-to-debut Michael Svoboda, while Georginio Rutter and new signing Femi Azeez face a race against the clock to be fit in time. United will put all their chips on the table for this one, but Seagulls love stealing chips. Can they steal a spot in the 4th round as well?
