Dark horses begin race for top 8 finish in Champions League
Lille meet Real Betis to kick off the league phase of this season’s Champions League in a game where both sides look evenly matched on paper.
Lille will be looking to make it 4 games unbeaten in all competitions this season. Their only hiccup in Ligue 1 so far was a 2-2 draw with back to back European champions PSG, a game that they were leading heading into the 90th minute. They bounced back with a narrow win at Toulouse on Thursday and now seek a first home win of the season.
For Betis, their last trip on the road was a bizarre 5-2 defeat to Levante, a result which raised a lot of eyebrows. They certainly answered their critics on Friday night with a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid thanks to a Puskas-worthy strike from Troy Parrott (allow it).
Both teams will be eager for a fast start on Tuesday night. Lille were a surprise top 8 entrant in the first league phase 2 years ago, and will be looking to pull that off again on their return to the competition, having missed out last season. For Real Betis, it’s their first time competing under the new format in this competition, but they finished 4th in this stage of the Europa League last season.
It’s not the flashiest tie of the night, but it’s one that could have major early implications for how the league table shapes up. Both sides could be dark horses this season.
A lil bet is (Lille Betis) due on this game surely?
Lille 2-3 Betis was played on matchday 1 of Champions League 2026/27. Lille sit 22nd in the table, while Real Betis sit 11th.
