PSG begin their Champions League campaign tonight at home against Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava. The Parisians are seeking their 3rd consecutive title in this tournament, a feat only matched in the Champions League era by Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid from 2016 - 2018. Surprisingly, PSG are without a win in their last 4 games and are yet to win in Ligue 1 this season, registering 2 draws and 2 defeats. In fact, their only victory so far came in the Super Cup against Aston Villa. Luis Enrique’s side saw 10 players nominated for the Ballon d’Or this week, 1/3 of the total field, so their uncharacteristically questionable form is on everyone’s mind heading into this one. Perhaps looking to take advantage of this is visiting underdogs Slovan Bratislava. The Slovakian champions are managed by Man City and Barcelona legend Yaya Touré, and also head into the game with mixed form. Having won the first 4 games of their 1. Liga title defence, they’ve since lost the last 2 in a row. It’s a David vs Goliath clash in Paris. But if there was ever a time for Goliath to lose, it’s now. In addition to PSG’s poor early season form, they also have a history of starting slow in the league phase, despite their knockout success. They have failed to qualify for the top 8 in both previous seasons of this format, finishing 11th last year and 15th the year prior. But poor Bratislava missed last year’s tournament, and finished 2nd bottom the year before, losing all 8 games and conceding 27, the joint most of any team. It should be a fairly straightforward affair for Paris, but you never know in football.
