Servette’s European Return Begins With a Lyon-Sized Challenge
Servette welcome eight-time European champions OL Lyonnes to Geneva as the two clubs meet for the first time in UEFA competition. For the Swiss champions, it marks a long-awaited return to this stage of the Women’s Champions League.
Servette captured their third Swiss title last season and fought through four UWCL qualifying matches to earn their place among Europe’s final 18. The Grenat began their continental campaign with convincing 3-0 and 4-0 victories over Dinamo-BSUPC and Aktobe before finding themselves in trouble against Sparta Praha. A 3-2 first-leg defeat left Servette needing a comeback in Geneva, and they delivered with a 3-0 home victory to advance 5-3 on aggregate.
Their only other appearance at this stage came in the ‘21-‘22 season, when they lost all six matches against Wolfsburg, Juventus and Chelsea without scoring a single goal. Five years later, there are already signs of how much has changed. Servette have scored at least twice in each of their last five European matches and kept six clean sheets across their last nine UWCL fixtures.
One of the biggest reasons for their attacking success has been Magdalena Sobal. The Polish forward, on loan from Juventus, has quickly become the focal point of Servette’s attack. She scored four goals across their four UWCL qualifying matches, finding the net in three of them, as the Swiss champions produced 12 goals on their way through qualifying. That included a brace in the decisive 3-0 second-leg victory over Sparta Praha. Juventus sent Sobal back to Servette for a second consecutive season after extending her contract through 2028, giving the Grenat another year with one of their most important attacking pieces.
For Daïna Bourma, this match carries an additional layer of significance. Born in Lyon, Bourma spent eight years developing in OL’s youth system alongside Selma Bacha, before continuing her career with Montpellier, Rangers and eventually Servette. She will now face the club where she grew up in one of the biggest matches of Servette’s European campaign.
OL Lyonnes arrive in Geneva as the most successful club in the history of the competition. They have appeared in a record 12 European finals and lifted the trophy eight times. Under Jonatan Giráldez, OL opened the ‘26-‘27 Première Ligue season with a 7-1 win over Fleury, a 7-1 win of Paris FC and an 8-1 demolition over Le Havre.
Three games. Twenty-two goals scored. Three conceded.
Perhaps even more intimidating for Servette is the OL attack with Melchie Dumornay at the center of it. Dumornay has six league goals through three matches, opening the campaign with a hat trick against Fleury, with two goals and two assists against Paris FC and scoring again against Le Havre. Ada Hegerberg, Jule Brand, Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Salma Paralluelo and others give Giráldez enough options to change the lineup without significantly weakening his attack. Caroline Weir also joined from Real Madrid over the summer. She and Wendie Renard missed OL’s opening domestic matches but traveled to Geneva for the UWCL opener.
Lyon are unbeaten in their last 23 UWCL league-phase matches, winning 18 and drawing five since a 5-1 defeat to Arsenal in October 2022. They have won 11 of their last 12 at this stage and scored in 18 consecutive group or league-phase matches. OL have also faced Swiss opposition five times previously and won every meeting, outscoring Zürich 31-1 across those matches. Servette, by comparison, have faced French opposition only once in Europe in a 3-0 defeat to Paris FC during qualifying in ‘22-‘23. OL therefore present a challenge unlike anything the Grenat encountered during this season’s qualifying run.
After falling one match short last season, the French side begins another continental campaign with the same ultimate goal of returning Lyon to the top of Europe. This opener will show just how close they are to reclaiming their title as Europe’s very best.
