Guatemala Look to Turn Heartbreak Into a Win Against El Salvador
Matchday 2 of the 2026/27 Concacaf Nations League continues with Guatemala hosting El Salvador at the Estadio Manuel Felipe Carrera, also known as Estadio El Trébol, in the nation's capital, Guatemala City.
Guatemala began their Concacaf Nations League campaign in heartbreaking fashion against Jamaica. Los Chapines took the lead two minutes into the match through Óscar Santis, but Jamaica equalized just before halftime and took the lead early in the second half. As the second half went on, Óscar Santis would come through again for Guatemala by scoring the equalizer in the 67th minute. Things did not end well for Los Chapines, as in the 94th minute Renaldo Cephas scored the winner for Jamaica, resulting in a 3-2 loss for Guatemala.
El Salvador, on the other hand, started their Concacaf Nations League campaign with a win over Martinique. Brayan Gil put La Selecta ahead within just eight minutes, and it didn't take long for him to score his second of the night. Harold Osorio then joined in with the third goal for El Salvador, putting them up 3-0 by halftime. Things slowed down for La Selecta in the second half, as they didn't score again and conceded a penalty early on, ending in a 3-1 win.
Guatemala will be looking for their first win of the year to keep their hopes alive in the Nations League. Playing El Salvador will be difficult, but doing so at home could give them a needed boost. Meanwhile, El Salvador will look to win away in Guatemala City the same way they did in the World Cup qualifiers, hoping to establish themselves as one of the favorites to advance from the group to the next phase of the Concacaf Nations League.
Guatemala 6-0 El Salvador was played in the League A - 2 of CONCACAF Nations League 2025/26.
