my first heartbreak as a blade. also my first trip to wembley. 13 year old me would soon learn that we just don’t do play-offs well from what i remember of the game, it was incredibly tight and there was almost nothing between both sides then came the penalties! it was going pretty well until it was decided that the goalkeepers would take a spot kick. smithies buried his away first, but simonsen? decided to boot it right up to the moon. i’m convinced it’s still floating around there maybe i have a very clear memory of a man angrily pushing a ketchup dispenser while on the phone to someone when we swiftly left following the penalty kick that still gives me nightmares today. despite that, i look back on it quite fondly being my first wembley experience also, not so fun fact: simonsen got found out for betting on multiple games a few years later. he had left us by that time though (unfortunately i don’t have any photos. think they got deleted from the camera we took to the game)
