Al-Hilal Saudi
NEOMMy first non-European watch of the league season this years falls to the Saudi Pro League, and with it comes a major league upset. Al Hilal finished last season in second, becoming one of the few unlucky teams to finish an entire campaign without defeat and still fail to win the title. Their streak continued into today where they faced Neom, a team from a city that does not exist (less ghost town, more embryo town). Neom's main player was Alexandre Lacazette, but compared to the superstars filling the Al Hilal team (with a new front three of Watkins, Summerville and Martinelli plucked out of the Premier League) you'd still expect Al Hilal to get the win. Their struggles began before the match as their first choice keeper and Morocco #1 Yassine Bounou was injured in the warm-up. Things derailed from there as Koulibaly metaphorically shat the bed and put a striker's goal into his own net. Mamadou Kone soon followed it up with a second, and Al Hilal were on the rocks. Despite their great front three and also spectacular midfield of Milinkovic-Savic and Ruben Neves, Hilal were completely withheld from doing anything of real quality by Neom. A generally poor performance from their main forwards mixed with a shambles at the back beyond their control ultimately led to their first defeat in 47 league matches at home tonight. Unlucky for them, but despite that they're still the favourites to claim the Pro League title this year. With a coach like Simone Inzaghi, who previously took Inter to two European Cup finals, they should hopefully be capable of bouncing back with a fit Bounou and a re-arranged defence in the future.
