Roma 2-2 Inter

Can Malen become a true Dutch hero for the Romans against the reigning champions, or will Chivu’s Inter triumph in Rome?

The first game that can become detrimental in the title race this season finds itself in gameweek 5 as Roma takes on reigning champions Inter at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Both sides have currently won all four games of the league season and are tied for first place. Roma defeated Torino last Monday with a score of 0-2, while Gian Piero Gasperini subbed out his stars Donyell Malen and Paulo Dybala quite early in the game to rest for the match on Saturday. The Dutchman was able to score yet again, bringing himself to six goals in four games; this makes him the third Roma player to do so in the opening four games of a season after Pedro Manfreni (seven in 1960/61), and Francesco Totti (six in 2001/02). While Dybala did not get an assist due to the goal being a rebound, he did provide the important through ball. The 32-year old already has four assists in four games and has proven his worth in Gasperini his aggressive and attacking style. Another player who has stood out is Gianluca Mancini; in the last game, he had the most touches in the box as a center back, making an important interception deep on Torino’s half as well that led to a goal for Roma. ‘I Lupi’ are on a nine match Serie A winning streak, their longest run since 2014, and they are looking to extend that to 10 and take the first place for just themselves. Inter came back from 0-2 down against Udinese, winning 5-2 in the end. This is the second Serie A game in a row where they had to come back from being two goals down. Goalkeeper Josip Martínez made another mistake in that game, letting his team down again after his error against Real Madrid as well. Regardless, the offensive play of Inter has looked positive, scoring 13 goals in four league games. Cristian Chivu, however, has stated that he is worried about their defensive performance after conceding eight in their five official games this season. Andy Diouf has been the player to watch so far; the Frenchman has three assists in the Serie A and has been crucial nearly every game thus far. Nicoló Barella is another player in form; he has a goal and assist already while also creating more chances than 97% of other players in his position in similar leagues. Unfortunately for the Nerazzurri, one of their more experienced players will likely have to sit this game out, as Hakan Çalhanoğlu sustained a thigh injury that already ruled him out of last Monday’s game. No Serie A fixture has produced more goals than this one, with an average of 2.9 per game. Inter has dominated this fixture in recent meetings; in the last 18 they have won 10 and drawn 6. So with the incredible form of Gasperini his Roma, and the very attacking but defensively weak Inter, this game is sure to be exciting.

Roma 2-2 Inter was played on matchday 5 of Serie A 2026/27. AS Roma sit 3rd in the table, while Inter sit 1st.
