Gladbach Target First Away Rhine Derby Win Since Pandemic Era
FC Köln will host Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday for a Bundesliga clash.
Coming into their first post-international break competitive game, Köln will aim to earn their first win since August 29, when a late Thijs Dallinga strike earned victory for Die Geißböcke against Hoffenheim. Since then it's been two losses and a draw, with another draw coming in a mid international-break friendly vs Viktoria Köln.
Some major missing players for Köln as their already missing players in Castro-Montes and Huber, are joined by Ragnar Ache and Thijs Dallinga who suffered injuries in their friendly with Viktoria. In brighter news however, Seb Sebulonsen is set to return.
For the opposition, they are still hungry for their first points of the season, bouncing four consecutive defeats in the Bundesliga on the spin. Conceding 16 goals throughout and only 6 goals in reply. Their season curtain raiser in the DFB Pokal gave some encouraging signs when they demolished Schott-Mainz 0-5. But since then its been all for nothing for Gladbach. In their mid-international-break friendly, they defeated Sportfreunde Siegen 0-3.
This weekend, is also the maiden game for Alexander Blessin who became the Monchengladbach manager over the past international break. Taking over from Eugen Polanski.
The squad exclusions for Monchengladbach currently are, Enzo Leopold with an ACL injury, Honorat and Nicholas Kuhn remain out via. Muscle injuries, and Jens Castrop after shoulder surgery. Some players nearing returns, maybe even as soon as the away trip to Köln are, Tim Kleindienst and Ko Itakura.
In the head to head records, Köln haven’t walked out of this clash with all three points since October 2023, when they won at home 3-1. But it’s not all rosy for Gladbach, who haven’t won away at Köln since October 2020. A crazy fact coming into this is, in each of the last four encounters, a team has scored at least 3 goals (if not both!).
Is Blessin the man to help Gladbach finally get their first point(s) on the board or will Köln return to form?
Köln 2-1 M'gladbach was played on matchday 5 of Bundesliga 2026/27. 1. FC Köln sit 10th in the table, while Borussia Mönchengladbach sit 18th.
