La Real face I Partenopei as both teams seek revival after a poor start
Villarreal hosts Napoli at the Estadio de la Cerámica on Tuesday night.
Villarreal lost 1-0 to Real Madrid last weekend in a close game where La Real couldn’t capitalize on a late Vinicius Jr. red card. The club led by Iñigo Pérez has only won two league games out of the eight played, leaving them in 11th place in La Liga.
Their European campaign started with a loss as well against Dortmund, as they went down 3-2 in Germany. They will want to get a result against Allegri’s Napoli as they have now gone 12 games in the Champions League without a win (2D, 10L), their last win being against Bayern München on the 6th of April 2022, while last season they did not win a single game in the league phase.
Villarreal will hope that Georges Mikautadze and Alberto Moleiro are fired up for this match; they are the most dangerous players for La Real with nine total goal contributions. Nicolas Pépé is likely unavailable due to an eye injury, which would be a big miss.
Napoli goes into this game as favourites, and comes out of the weekend with a convincing performance against Frosinone, extending their unbeaten streak to three. The Parthenopeans 8th in the Serie A; after a shaky start Allegri has settled the ship and they have looked much more comfortable on the pitch.
Napoli’s first Champions League game of the season ended in a loss at home against English champions and Champions League finalists Arsenal. Though the scoreline was only 1-0 they brought absolutely nothing to the game, conceding over 4 xG while only creating 0.22 themselves. Just like Villarreal the club from Naples has a poor recent record in this competition, as they only won one of their last seven matches. Furthermore in their last nine visits to Spain they have only won once (1D, 7L).
Allegri will mostly rely on Kevin De Bruyne; if the Belgian can continue his good form of the past weeks then his side will have one of the best passers in the world.
The two clubs have faced each other six times before in Europe, both sides winning twice, while the other two games ended in a draw. The last time they played each other was just over 10 years ago in the Round of 32 of the Europa League. The game ended 1-1 which was enough for Villarreal to advance after their tight 1-0 win the week prior.
Villarreal 3-1 Napoli was played on matchday 2 of Champions League 2026/27. Villarreal sit 14th in the table, while Napoli sit 32nd.
