Big win when everyone lost. These are the kinds of performances you need in order to win leagues eventually, and even though we’re far from that, I’m glad Iraola knew how to react once we jammed a lead. Bournemouth are a good team, probably the best they’ve ever been, and they were probably up for it after winning in Europe and facing their old boss. James Hill was their most impressive player for me, and even though Rayan was the most flashy, Christie feels their scariest. As for us, Wirtz is a problem. I like the guy, but this is arguably the closest Bundesliga style pitch in the league, and to mess up that many plays was concerning. Klopp needs to get in his ear or something, because for us to be sacrificing a body in midfield for another attacker, means he had to do more. Same goes for Barcola, although he did have more moments today. Isak is nonexistent in general play but he’s at four goals this season - he can do ballet on the edge of the box for all I care, as long as he sticks it in the back of the net. Gakpo is playing like 19/20 Gnabry, simply unplayable, dribbling and jamming in the ball anywhere. Macca and Szobo will go under the radar today, as will Kerkez, but all three were really good at just making it hard for Bournemouth to play. Jacquet looks like the heir to VVD, for all the hate Hughes gets, he got that signing right. Look at Lacroix and Konsa this weekend, then look at Jacquet. The kid might surpass Varane in talent and achievement. Nyoni needs to play more. The fact he came on and we didn’t notice him, is a testament to the player he has become. To be that calm at 19, IN MIDFIELD, is incredible. He needs to be starting next to Macca. A word on Alisson. Simply the best GK in the league. How many times he’s saved us is insane, and for him to only have two leagues and a UCL is kind of disrespectful. He needs least another UCL here. Thought Iraola reacted well, closed up the team, and got us to October undefeated. Good weekend.

Sometimes a player has a match so bad you laugh at them. David Luiz comes to mind a lot. But sometimes a player has a match so bad you genuinely want to hug them and help them look for a new career. When Ryan Gravenberch came off today, I felt so sorry for him that I couldn’t even get angry at him. How a professional footballer missed that many short passes and got his position wrong that much was really frightening to see. His confidence is shot, and apart from a January move, Iraola should only use him for a Carabao Cup games. Wirtz, though. He wasn’t depression-inducing-bad, just regular bad, so I can be mad at him. He has until December to improve, or I’m shipping him off too. You can’t be wearing the #7 for this club and go missing like that. He kicks like he’s scared of the ball, and he hides behind Kerkez and Szoboszlai when he faces duels. Isak was not much better, but he touched the ball, so there’s that. Yet again, Dom was somehow our worst and best player. But at least he’s actually trying things, unlike Wirtz. Everyone else was meh, but VVD always does my head in with the nonchalant gimmick after a big game. Mate, it was Atletico in the group stage. You’re not prime Baresi to be able to stroll at 0-0 like that. For what it’s worth, Fulham played very well. Arbeloa clearly knew it was do or die, and gave up on his principles to revert to what Liverpool struggle most with: deep blocks. The only slight I’ll give to Iraola, because he can’t be blamed for his players being stupid divas, were his subs and handling of a deep block. You have to be more creative than crossing, and we were too open at the end because he took out all the height. Without Araujo and Barcola, we were left to be manhandled by Fulham. He will have to learn quickly how to best beat a low-block, and to bench the stars when they don’t shine. To sub off Barcola and Muñoz but keep on Isak and Wirtz when it was clear they weren’t at it, was absurd. Spurs next.
