As European football finally arrives at the steps of the grand Camp Nou, Barça turn their gaze toward Feyenoord and the thousands of Het Legioen who have travelled alongside her, as the Catalan giants commence their latest venture in pursuit of the coveted prize that has long eluded them since the dusk of their golden age. In which, they hope to replicate the same overwhelming prowess they have displayed against their fellow league competitors. Where Barça aggressively suffocated opponents beneath relentless pressing, blistering pace, and intense positional fluidity. Combined with an attacking ferocity that allowed them to blitz their way toward victory through the sheer abundance of quality harboured within a frontline that only a precious few could rival. Yet, Feyenoord will serve as Barça's first true test of the campaign and, perhaps, a first glimpse into what awaits them throughout the long and arduous season ahead. One in which history, curiously enough, may once again favour the Catalans. For it was over half a century ago when these two sides first crossed paths in the 1974/75 European Cup. After a stubborn stalemate in Rotterdam, it was the great Carles Rexach, whom many may know as the Barça legend who famously signed La Pulga on that timeless napkin, who propelled the Blaugranas toward victory at the Camp Nou with an iconic hat-trick. Years later, the influence of the great Johan Cruijff would once again reach across generations through a young and brilliant Dutch midfielder rising through the ranks of Feyenoord, whose immense promise eventually carried him from Rotterdam to North London before finally arriving in Barcelona. Where he would carve his own name into Barça's history. And now, after having long since hung up his boots and channelled his footballing wisdom into an admirable managerial career, that same midfielder has returned to take command of his boyhood club. Where, in his second stint at the helm, Giovanni van Bronckhorst....

Now the stadium was truly alight. Even when Feyenoord caught Barça by surprise with a consolation goal shortly afterwards, the chants of the culés never faded. Nor did the hunger of the players, who continued searching relentlessly for a fifth. Then came the reinforcements. Princess Diana, the seven-foot Bernal, and the Ferminator were thrown into the cauldron, brewing an atmosphere of immense anticipation as Barça sought to achieve another commanding victory.

@geo Yet the final act belonged to the long-awaited Jesús, whose second coming had seemingly been foretold. After another dazzling performance, Lamine delivered a beautiful cross into the box, sending the ball into the path of Jesús who met it and made his mark.

@geo As the final whistle echoed across the stadium and the last touch of the ball was gathered, Barça had, once again, climbed to the summit. Standing proudly atop the podium after overcoming the first major obstacle laid across their path.

@geo Although what lies ahead remains for the future to foretell, for now, we can only look back upon this fantastic moment and hope that, one day, it will be remembered as the inaugural match that set us upon our road to history as we rejoice into the night.

When the second half commenced, however, it proved to be the polar opposite of its predecessor. The furious rhythm of the opening half gave way to a slower, more sluggish tempo. Yet, with Oliva Rodrigo anchoring the midfield and creating the space for Pedri Potter to roam freely, the magician was once again given the stage upon which to perform his sorcery.

@geo Spotting the run of Spidey Rapha, Pedri threaded a wonderful pass into his path, and Rapha made no mistake, calmly slotting it home for Barça’s third of the night and another brace dedicated to his son.

@geo Despite the growing deficit and what seemed to a disastrous night, Feyenoord refused to yield. Putting together several promising passages of play and repeatedly threatening through crosses and long balls with moments of brillance, here and there. On another night, some of those chances might easily have become goals. But Hansi’s superbly drilled offside trap proved merciless, repeatedly catching the visitors a step too eager and ruining their celebrations.

@geo Then, around the 77th minute, a poor challenge gifted Barça a free kick in dangerous territory. It was the sort of opportunity that demanded the confidence, and perhaps the cheekiness, that only a young, fearless talent could possess. Rather than curling the ball around the Feyenoord wall, he cunningly fired straight through it and somehow, the shot squeezed through the smallest of gaps before nestling into the back of the net.

As the rain gradually retreated and the warm Catalan sun began to pierce through the clouds, so too did the spirits of the Dutchmen begin to evaporate. For, out of nowhere in the twenty-two minute, came the German Road Runner Adeyemi, bursting forward before cutting inside and unleashing a worldie of a goal.

@geo Eventually, the player who helped Adeyemi with that golazo, João Cancelo, came from behind to test the opposition with efforts of his own. Alongside the Starboy and Pedri Potter who continued to torment the Dutch side and making fools of those unfortunate enough to stand before them. All the while, whatever threats Feyenoord could muster were swiftly extinguished by the formidable partnership of Cubarsí and Christensen.

@geo On the rare occasion that the Dutch managed to breach the Catalan wall, due to Goonde’s foolish mistakes. Super Joan García stood tall between the posts, producing a superb save to preserve Barça’s control of the match.

….finds himself carried back toward the very shores that once elevated and refined all the superb characteristics he possessed as a player.

@geo As the rain began to pour over the field where the Camp de Les Corts once stood, Giovanni and his side soon discovered what it was like to face a dominant, brutal force. One that posed a constant threat across every inch of the final third with a perpetual hunger to accomplish eternal glory. And so, the storm born upon Rotterdam’s shores, carried forth on the breath of the sea, had finally struck Catalonia.

@geo It struck like thunder, yet was robed in the colours of the Blaugranas. At the heart of it all was the elegance and supreme composure of the rightful Ballon d’Or winner. With a single feint, he sent two Feyenoord players helplessly sliding across the rain-slicked grass before gliding beyond them and coolly slipping the ball past the keeper.
