Best match ever in the history of this wonderful sport. There isn’t really much I can say to do this game justice. As an actual Argentinian, this meant something to me; watching Messi lift the prestigious trophy 36 years after Maradona in Mexico, while having a generational tournament (along with Di Maria, Dibu and Alvarez) - cementing himself as the greatest player ever - was special. People tend to forget the true nature of this match and try to write some narrative that it was competitive the whole time, we dominated from minute 1 to 80. That Di Maria goal is one of my favourites of all time, the way we linked up and carved their defence open was straight out of a movie. We were the better team and France couldn’t lay a glove on us - until that ridiculous Otamendi challenge that brought France back in it - and then #that volley that sunk my country’s hearts. After that first penalty, Mbappe became a monster. Every time he got the ball it looked like he would score it was so scary. But we fought hard and defended with grit. Messi scored again, but another extremely preventable penalty was given away which gave Mbappe his hattrick. And then penalties. The relief I had after Tchouameni and Coman missed was bliss, and the moment Montiel’s penalty hit the net it was beautiful. A generational moment in a generational match during a generational tournament for a generational player in a generational country. Made me cry🥹.
