very happy for spain. but for my leo… i have so much to say. i don’t know football without leo messi. i genuinely don’t know how to say goodbye to him either. and i don’t know how you grieve someone who’s technically still playing. because that’s what this feels like. it feels like i’m saying goodbye to the biggest chapter of my life as a football fan, and i don’t know what comes after that. i think that’s the most beautiful, and the most heartbreaking, part about football. how unbelievably bittersweet it is. my heart broke watching him lose his final world cup. but in the middle of all that heartbreak, i couldn’t stop thinking about something else. maradona’s final world cup ended in heartbreak, and football found messi. now messi’s final world cup ends in heartbreak, and football has found lamine. maybe that’s how this sport survives. maybe every goodbye is also the beginning of someone else’s story. football is so fucking beautiful like that. legends leave, but they never leave the game empty. they leave it in better hands than they found it. and i don’t think there’s a more beautiful example of that than watching leo smile as this next generation begins to write its own story. so thank you, leo. thank you for every ounce of joy you’ve brought me. every ounce of passion. every ounce of belief. from the little girl who fell in love with football because of you, to the woman i am today… thank you. i’ll never know football the way i knew it with you. i don’t think i’ll ever love this sport in quite the same way again. but because of you, i’ll always love it. you’ll always be the reason. maybe that’s what feels the most full circle. my heart shattered in 2014. somehow, that heartbreak became the reason i fell in love with football. and twelve years later… you broke it one last time and still left me with something to love. forever grateful, leo

i don’t even know where to start with this match. i genuinely went into it expecting argentina to come out on top, so that first goal definitely rocked me. weirdly enough though, i was calm. i think seeing messi live and knowing he already has a world cup has settled something in me. even if today had been the end, i don’t think it would’ve changed what he’s already accomplished. and then football reminded me exactly why i love it so much. there’s something so beautiful about watching a team that has already won everything still fight like they have nothing. you could see the desperation grow. every tackle, every run, every chance suddenly carried so much more weight. i can’t even imagine what that stadium sounded like. even messi looked off today, but then that late goal happened. holy fuck. i’ve always said messi taught me how to believe. he taught me patience, hope and perseverance. once again, he reminded me why. i do wish scaloni had changed things earlier. i still don’t understand some of the lineup decisions. but none of that matters right now. i’d already accepted that maybe this was the end, but i’m a sucker for a fairytale. they’ve already shaken hands with greatness once. who’s to say they can’t do it again?

I had to rewatch this game hours later after the final whistle because I simply could not comprehend what had happened and was also feeling pulled in by the commentary from all over. I legit think I blacked out after Messi’s goal and even then I still thought Egypt had better odds of winning bc frankly, I have very little confidence in Argentina this World Cup. Rewatching this game was necessary to 1) breakdown tactics/plays from both teams, 2) digest what happened starting at the 75’ minute, and 3) have my own opinion on the calls (or non calls). First half Argentina was atrocious particularly bc Enzo and macallister have been having a terrible run of form this tournament and the squad have been heavily reliant on running the ball through messi again. Both of those are a recipe for disaster in addition to their terrible gaps for counter attacking plays. Egypt knew what to do, exploited those weaknesses and made 2 easy goals through very beautiful plays - even when one was disallowed from a late VAR call (which was a foul, but when it was called was bad). However, the moment messi moved back to his RW position and gave a beautiful service for cuti’s statement header, that was when Egypt started to crack. 10 minutes later, they concede another goal from messi this time and at that point, that is on Egypt’s tactical breakdown. Argentina’s 3rd goal seems to be contentious. Should there have been a VAR review for Alvarez’s tackle on Salah in the box? Yes. But was it a foul? No, bc Alvarez got the ball first, tapped Salah’s foot and Salah was diving for a call (it was not subtle at all). After a rewatch and reading/hearing comments from fans, players, managers, this game is simply a testament of Argentina’s experience on the world stage and their will to come back stronger. Conceding 2 goals in 10 minutes is simply bad game plan with complacency. It’s easy to point the blame when there’s an easy villain to yell at but at this point, own up to your mistakes.

In honor of it being the 39th birthday of the greatest of all time, I have been looking back at the best matches of the career of Messi, 2011 in Wembley, 2009 in Rome before that, 16/17 El Clasico in the Bernabeu where he got battered and bruised against Marcelo and Ramos and still slotted it in to the bottom left corner but this match is the greatest match at the greatest stage for the greatest player. Argentina this campaign was coming off a hot streak of 34 unbeaten games and a Copa America win for Messi with them being heavy favorites to win it all, until that Saudi Arabia game and we all knew what happened, Dawsari scored to cause that upset, Saudi got a national holiday and Messi was in real danger of being knocked out of a chance to get the ultimate prize and then the Mexico Game also happened, Argentina was cagey against Mexico for the better part of 70 minutes until Messi does what Messi does best and bam, slots past Ochoa and from then, it was a full on rampage, G/A against every single opponent he faced, including a brace in this said final. I remember this game like the back of my mind with the game kicking off in a dominant fashion for Argentina, their fluid positional play and 2-0 by half time and my mind went back to my first memory of watching football, I am a Germany fan and that final was a moment where it felt like the hero losing despite everything that happened but I was clearly celebrating because of my team winning, karma really became something after that but let’s get back to Messi. My brother is an Argentina fan and I remember he never became this stressed in his entire life, heart attacks, slowed breaths, labored breaths infact but it was all worth it because of that one man, that one moment where he ended up being the best of all time, it was always a monkey on the back for him, Maradona, Pele, Ronaldo and 8 years later from that night in Maracana, he walked away with a full crown of jewels and as the king of the hill that night.

Who is Messi? For the blind, he is the vision. For the hungry, he is the food. For the thirsty, he is the water. If he thinks, I agree. If he speaks, I listen. If he has a million fans, I am one of them. If he has ten fans, I am one of them. If he has only one fan, that is me. If he has no fans then I am dead.
