i wanted to take my time and truly let it all settle before i wrote this. honestly, i can’t really put into words how i feel about all of it. there was a brief moment where, despite how confident i was in my team, i thought this might be the day i had to say goodbye to messi in an argentina shirt. and that thought broke something in me. this is the same messi who changed my life, especially my love for football. i think i was in denial that one day we’d have to let this chapter end, and even now, it still hasn’t fully reached my heart. but wow. what a privilege it has been to witness this. at 39 years old, he’s going back to back in a world cup final. somehow, people have made an achievement like that feel ordinary because it’s messi. the hate, the agendas, the constant attempts to diminish him have made greatness feel expected. but it isn’t. one day, we’ll look back and realize we were watching something we’ll probably never see again. whether you love him or hate him, you were lucky enough to exist at the same time as this version of lionel messi. and then there’s the poetry of it all. as a culer, my two worlds are meeting in a world cup final. a true la masia final. instead of spending the morning sick with nerves, i get to simply appreciate the football. and if this really is his final world cup, how fitting that the last hurdle is a team filled with barcelona players who grew up idolizing him, players who would have given everything to share a pitch with him in blaugrana. some stories just feel written long before they happen. more than anything, i hope he walks off that pitch feeling at peace. whether he lifts the trophy or not, this already feels like a beautiful ending. i’ve dreaded the day i’d have to say thank you and goodbye to messi for as long as i can remember. but if this is how his world cup story ends, i honestly couldn’t have imagined a more poetic one.

We would have witnessed this match twice. I genuinely didnt expect this final man. Neither spain nor argentina. France were so lethal and balanced throughout their whole campaign. They were looking unstoppable. On the other hand england were so technical and you cant doubt tuchel in knockout competitions. But what should i even say. Both spain and argentina surprised me in the semifinals. Spain fucking dominated france throughout the whole match and what should i even say about argentina. Their whole campaign was moving forward through clutch moments whether it was cape verde, egypt, switzerland or tonight against england 😭. They gave me a heart attack throughout the whole campaign. And what should i even say about messi. Fucking god of the game. Probably the greatest carry job ever done by any player because how are you giving at least one goal contribution in every game at the age of 39. Most players retire at that age and he is breaking records while going head to head with mbappe and haaland. I dont know what i should even say anymore. I was very stressed before the 22 world cup final but on sunday i will be chilled. I dont care which team lifts the trophy. It will be historical either way.

I had to rewatch this game hours later after the final whistle because I simply could not comprehend what had happened and was also feeling pulled in by the commentary from all over. I legit think I blacked out after Messi’s goal and even then I still thought Egypt had better odds of winning bc frankly, I have very little confidence in Argentina this World Cup. Rewatching this game was necessary to 1) breakdown tactics/plays from both teams, 2) digest what happened starting at the 75’ minute, and 3) have my own opinion on the calls (or non calls). First half Argentina was atrocious particularly bc Enzo and macallister have been having a terrible run of form this tournament and the squad have been heavily reliant on running the ball through messi again. Both of those are a recipe for disaster in addition to their terrible gaps for counter attacking plays. Egypt knew what to do, exploited those weaknesses and made 2 easy goals through very beautiful plays - even when one was disallowed from a late VAR call (which was a foul, but when it was called was bad). However, the moment messi moved back to his RW position and gave a beautiful service for cuti’s statement header, that was when Egypt started to crack. 10 minutes later, they concede another goal from messi this time and at that point, that is on Egypt’s tactical breakdown. Argentina’s 3rd goal seems to be contentious. Should there have been a VAR review for Alvarez’s tackle on Salah in the box? Yes. But was it a foul? No, bc Alvarez got the ball first, tapped Salah’s foot and Salah was diving for a call (it was not subtle at all). After a rewatch and reading/hearing comments from fans, players, managers, this game is simply a testament of Argentina’s experience on the world stage and their will to come back stronger. Conceding 2 goals in 10 minutes is simply bad game plan with complacency. It’s easy to point the blame when there’s an easy villain to yell at but at this point, own up to your mistakes.
