Well, this is one of those days in football I never wanted to witness, but sadly, it has arrived. You’re not leaving the game entirely, but stepping away from international football feels like the first step toward that day, which I can hardly bear to think about. Maybe the funniest way to honor you is to recognize what you did for millions of people: you made us willingly tune in and support Argentina, all to watch you play this little sport called football. I’m not Argentine, but somewhere along the way that stopped mattering. When you played, we all became a little bit Argentine. I’ll never forget the highs and lows I experienced following you. The 2014 World Cup final, when you were so close to conquering the sport so early on in your career. The back-to-back Copa América finals lost on penalties. But you deserved more than that. You got more than that. You finally lifted your very first international trophy in 2021. Of course I’ll always remember 2022, the greatest World Cup campaign I’ll ever witness, with the most entertaining final of all time. Then we got another Copa in 2024. You literally won every trophy that you lost, how perfect was that? After years of people saying you couldn’t do it for Argentina, you won everything there was to win. But the trophies aren’t what I’ll remember most. It’s the way you played, the way you always entertained me. The dribbles that made defenders look lost, the passes no one else could see, the free kicks that felt like penalties the moment the referee blew the whistle. You made the impossible look routine, and you did it with a quiet humility that made billions fall in love with you. This summer’s ending was bittersweet, and honestly, part of me wishes you’d won it. But you had nothing left to prove. You gave me more than I ever had the right to ask for: the story of your career. There will never be another player who can do what you did. You are football. You are eternal. Thank you for everything, Leo.

The game is more remembered for it's history. Arsenal were looking to win their first UCL in their final season at Highbury, while Barcelona were looking for their 2nd UCL trophy, 14 years after Cruyff won them their first, this time with another Dutch legend, Frank Rijkaard. It's not that entertaining for a neutral to be honest but still iconic and relevant today with both Arsenal and Barcelona being real contenders to win the UCL again. The two clubs were just friends until the 18th minute where Lehmann went too far with his flirting and got sent off for his foot fetish, becoming the first ever Goalkeeper to be sent off in a UCL final. For some reason, the referee didn't play advantage and the frenchman Giuly couldn't get his goal. So the score stayed 0-0 until the Spurs legend Sol Campbell scored in the 37th minute from a set piece. Some things never change I guess. After the red they dropped into a deep 4-4-1 with Henry alone up front, and tried to survive and counter. Barcelona on the other hand kept the ball but couldn't break the block. So Rijkaard added a young Iniesta at half-time, who impressed me, mostly by having hair for once. And after the hour he added the actual game winners, not an injured 18 year old autistic golden boy, but the swedish Larsson who came off the bench and gave Barcelona a lush life. As well as Belletti (Balotelli if you're dyslexic) in the 71st minute. Larsson set up Samuel Eto'o who finished it near post past Almunian foil to equalize in the 76th minute. Some claim it was offside but there was no VAR back then to waste 5 minutes and make a wrong decision. So Barcelona kept their momentum and the Swede got his 2nd assist in his last ever game for the Catalans just 4 minutes later, by passing it to the random kid right back Belletti to make it 2-1. Arsenal, a solid defensive side that kept 10 clean sheets on the way to Paris, went up 1-0 but got dominated and lost. Hmm, I hope nothing similar happens to them 20 years later...

I think that’s like 16 goals for boston to score hella late in games AND make upsets. Very rare to see Sophia get a red card but hair pulling sucks, even if it’s unintentional. Props to Portland and tordin for trying their hardest without their attacker.

i really don’t think any tournament will ever come close to this one for me. the crowds, the players, the commentary. everything about it is so memorable and brings back the joy this tournament brought. winning it was one thing but the way these players won it was just insane, some of the best football i’ve ever seen us play. this group of players was a special special group and my favourite for sure. the way they amped the crowd after every tackle, but stayed calm and collected. the way they fought for every ball and never gave up. the comeback vs spain, and the winner vs germany are two of the highlights of not only this tournament but all football i’ve watched. you could tell this meant a lot to the players and that the players were hungry to win this and would do anything to make sure they did. everything was near perfect in this tournament, the tactical side of it from sarina was the best we’ve seen from her. i don’t think anyone will ever be able to replicate what this tournament brought for england, nor the way they won it. winning a home euros was always gonna feel special, especially as our first euros win, but the change it brought for women’s football across the country was monumental, and rewatching it you can tell why. even only being 1-0 up it felt comfortable we would win because these players were giving their all into defending the lead. this squad will always hold a special place for me, bus also for women’s football in general, especially in england for the things they did for the WSL. leah williamson, keira walsh and especially beth meads performance in this tournament cannot be overstated, the whole squad were perfect but those 3 were key players for me that we don’t win without.

Liverpool didn't stand a chance, Ancelottis Milan with Maldini, Pirlo, Kaká and Edin Džeko's childhood idol Shevchenko were heavy favorites. Under first-season manager Rafa Benitez, Liverpool finished 5th in the league and roughly 40,000 Scousers travelled to Istanbul, mostly hoping to just avoid Humiliation. And the first half was looking likely to be just that, with the legendary Maldini scoring from Pirlos free kick, after just 50 seconds. Following Kewell's injury and Crespo's brace set up by 04 & 07 Ballon D'or winners Shevchenko and Kaká, reds were down 3-0 going into half time. Liverpool didn't give up though, the fans sung YNWA so loudly during half time that the players report hearing it in the dressing rooms. And then in the second half came the six-minute spell. Norwegian Riise crossed to the captain Gerrard who scored a stunning Header. Šmicer smashed a long-range shot into the bottom right corner. Stadium was so loud I could barely hear the commentators. Some tackles maybe good, some tackles maybe shit and 2026 World Cup play off loser Gattuso fouls Gerrard in the box, with Carragher appealing for a red but not a soul on earth could understand him. The young Xabi, mogging me through the screen, steps up to equalize for LFC. He shoots a shit pen but then scores the rebound. 3-3. Just like that Arsenal Calcio Milan bottles their lead. Some good defending from Carragher, wasted chances from Tomasson, a great double save from Dudek, but nothing crazy, with the exception of Cissé's majestic hair and beard. Serginho steps up for Milan to start the Shootout. He blazes it over Gabriel-esque and Hamman scores. Dudek saved Pirlos shot, Big Cissé made it 2-0. Kaká ignored Dudeks weird mating dance and converted, Šmicer made it 3-2. Then Shevchenko, who scored the winning pen in Milans 2003 Final, gets his pen saved and scousers rejoice. LFCs 5th European Cup, 21 years after their last and now 21 years since this Turkish Delight. I want a juicy Kebab now ffs.

Utah Royals2 - 1North Carolina Courageutah had the better start for sure, sanchez had a shot that she just hit too high but other than that we weren’t really a threat. utah had the offside cloe lacasse shot that was an INSANE save from kailen and then she managed to stay onside for her next shot and man it was a good goal i cant even complain, and at least if we had to concede it was cloe. in fairness courages forwards have done so so good this season to the extent that despite losing our last 2 and being a goal down i still could see us getting something out of this. utah were pressing the hell out of us and we just don’t look content at all. penalty call looked a bit shaky for a second but i’m glad we got it and i’m so so happy for ashley sanchez now being the join record holder for most goals in an NWSL season and she didn’t even need the extra 4 expansion games 😭❤️ second half started fairly evenly but nothing really of note happened. utah goal was just devastating man it was fairly evenly before it but it was good build up play for the goal i can’t even complain. think today was one of erica megs “worst” game, and im using worst in a very harsh way today, but she wasn’t bad at all. think the substitute shows this too she just wasn’t herself today which is disappointing cause her form lately is arguably one of the best in the league. a third 2-1 loss straight just isn’t good enough, we gotta start learning from our mistakes and not just letting them happen again. result put a dampener on ash sanchez achievement but nothing can be taken away from the stellar season she has had. just immaculate. POTM for me is ash sanchez cause she tied the record i don’t give a fuck

International Break and being sick got me bored as hell so decided to start (re) watching the ucl finals. Starting with the earliest one I could find on Bookd. I was sadly only a hatchling during Peps Barcelona and SAFs United, so I didn't watch this one live. Both teams were looking to get their 4th UCL title and United were entering the fixture with an advantage of the rematch of the 2009 final being played at the Wembley stadium. On the road to the final they beat reigning Ligue 1 runners up Marseille, Ancelottis Chelsea and Rauls Schalke. While Barca on their journey beat Arsenal with 4 goals from Messi, Ukrainian Champions Shakhtar and an iconic El Classico in the semi final that they won thanks to Pepe's red, Messi's brace and Pedros goal. First half Barca was dominant with about 400 passes and 69% ball posession (nice), thanks their iconic midfield trio Busquets, Iniesta and Xavi, who absolutely ran the midfield the entire match. But United weren't chuds and fought well in my opinion. After a classic tiki-taka goal from Pedro, the Red Devils (not Kaiserslautern) answered with a beautiful goal from the balding Rooney. The half ended leveled, but it was obvious who ran the game. Second half the Catalans were just as dominant. Therefore in the 53' minute, a 23 year old Lionel Messi made history with an iconic goal from a low driven shot outside the box. That marked his 12th goal in 13 UCL games to give Barcelona the lead. Every single goal in this final was a banger, including David Villas brilliant goal to make it 3-1 and bury the game. You can question his facial hair choice but not his finishing. The Puyol cameo at the end also made me laugh, no disrespect of course Great Match, had everything you wanted. Atmosphere, fun football, great goals and the better team lifting the Trophy. It's giving me a case of anemoia
