This game pretty much summed up both England and Argentina perfectly. Argentina played rather defensively for the most part and, one might add, very aggressively, while all England wanted was one goal, the first goal. And they even got that goal from Gordon, who was found with an absolutely delicious cross by Rogers. And then Tuchel made some baffling tweaks that just made the entire English team sit back in an extreme low block and defend for their lives for the next 40 minutes. England ended the game with six, yes, SIX defenders on the pitch. What this also causes is that if you happen to concede a goal or manage to hoof the ball out of your own penalty area, you have no attacking outlets remaining with Gordon, the only one in this English side who could exploit the Argentine defensive line with his speed, being taken off. Every single English player was behind the ball, and all Argentina had to do was pepper them with crosses and passes into the box to pin them back. The problem with this game plan is, and why it worked against Mexico and not against Argentina, is one man: Messi. You CANNOT go into that defensive of a structure without any intention of attacking with that absolute DEMON on the pitch. And once again, just like against Egypt, he stepped up, took the onus on himself in the last 20 minutes, and turned this game around pretty much single-handedly. He had able allies in Enzo and Lautaro, but pretty much 90% of everything went through Messi on the right flank, either beating his man on the outside and whipping a cross in or cutting in and playing those absolutely sublime one-twos to open up the English backline. And I can't lie, I enjoyed every minute of him running the clock back. One has to soak it in; he might only play one more game in Argentine colors. People may dislike this Argentine team, but watching Messi play at his absolute best is always a special, special thing to witness.

Fuck Ronaldo, for the last time this tournament that i have to say that. Not a goal fest but enjoyable regardless, huge chance for Oyarzabal early in the game that should’ve been a goal. Also a great save from Diogo Costa. Couple of chances for Ronaldo too but nothing too crazy. Love myself some last minute winners though, Mikel Merino is just so good in those kind of situations, just knows where to be at what time. I can just continue my agenda on hating Roberto Martinez because he’ll never do anything useful. Yet again i ask for his coaching license to be taken away and gifted to me, id do a better job with this Portugal team. Theres no tactic or strategy at all, just go make sure Ronaldo gets an opportunity thats it. No wonder the PSG Portuguese are lost because they are used to an elite manager. Maybe Portugal will be better in two years, or four years, that depends when Ronaldo leaves. One of the best teams in the world but Ronaldo makes this team useless. Also bye bye Ronaldo. I will also say again, after i already did after the Austria game, that this midfield of Rodri, Pedri, and Olmo doesn’t work. They are all too far away from each other leaving Pedri all alone and unable to do what he does best. Fraudulent behavior from DLF. Baena is just rough, but if Nico Williams was fit he wouldn’t be playing at all. Cubarsí was yet again so mature in that defense. USA or Belgium next so should be a slightly easier game for Spain. Man of the match Rodri for me, he put in a shift and a half today. Most touches, 13 progressive passes, 6 defcon too.

No way their defense and entire squad gave everyone a hard time while having current best players on the planet . I genuinely couldn’t believe it, because I don’t know Argentina are bad or Cape Verde are so good that they make other teams look average . This match going to extra time is the last thing I expected, honestly Cape Verde showed the world what playing with your soul for the badge could do and where it can take you. Today, we almost witnessed arguably the biggest upset in world cup history. Cape Verde defend but they defend to do something, and when they attack, they sting where it hurts most which is even more impressive, I am still shocked. The only things that was expected and it happened it is that Argentina won at the end, but they needed to give 200% to win. So happy for Messi, yet so sad for Cape Verde, their passion and unexpected performance will truly be missed and forever remembered. Cape Verde were the secret sauce to this tournament, they were the team that showed big nation’s weaknesses, they were the reason that big nations changed a lot of things. The emotions during this match were all over the place, it was something special and cannot be described what so ever, only people watched the game will ever understand. Cape Verde, welcome to history and you can leave with your heads up.. 🇦🇷🇨🇻

First id like to say fuck Ronaldo, 2009 will not be forgotten. I would also like to say that as I’m known for my tactical analysis that Roberto Martínez is a fraud and should give his coaching licenses to me because i genuinely think i would make a better manager than him. I think the first half wasnt as bad as many people said. To me it was okay, ive seen muuuuch worse and there were some exciting moments. Cristiano Ronaldo played disappointingly as expected, but theres something beautiful yet weird about watching one of the greatest of all time to be this washed, i dont quite know how to explain that feeling because i also just really dislike him as a human so maybe that impacts some of it. He had zero touches in the box throughout the first half which for him is just disastrous, long gone are the days of him being the best in the world. Vitinha has been very disappointing too, just plays very safe but its also necessary because if he risks things than the attack will not be able to do anything useful as they are awful lmao. A super defensive Croatia too, not too many attacks from their side which was disappointing to see. Second half started incredible honestly, immediately some chances and who else than 37 year old Ivan Perišić scoring the opener. Most goals on World Cups now for Croatia. Almost a insane equalizer from Rafael Leão right after, im a huge hater so seeing how he hit that woodwork made me a bit nervous lmao. What a hit though. Ronaldo finally scoring a knockout goal! But it was offside, brilliant goal if he timed that run better. He got his knockout goal anyway though, not the best pen he has taken but it went in anyway. 100% pen too, no way around it. With that he becomes the oldest goalscorer in World Cup knockouts at 41 years and 147 days. Another fun fact i saw was two of the 7 oldest goalscorers scoring within 15 minutes of each other. Unsuccessful hatewatch, still gotta rate it properly though. I don’t really know where this all came from, i know Uzbekistan are usually very good defensively but they absolutely threw it away here. I suppose it has to do with Cannavaro replacing their previous manager despite him qualifying Uzbekistan for the world cup. He pretty much plays the same way but i think for the players its also strange to kick the manager out who was successful for a Serie B reject, like hes not even asked to manage clubs anymore in the second italian division lmao (Italian football fact). Ronaldo with two goals but i will decide to say nothing about it because i have very strong opinions towards him and i do not respect him as a person. My morals cant accept it. I am interested to see how Martinez will make this Portugal team play for the upcoming games, definitely could lead to issues when they play a bigger side. They played pretty good this game but end of the day its still ‘only’ Uzbekistan and you have to take it with a grain of salt. Nuno Mendes played better than lest game as well, midfield felt a lot better in general which helped the whole team. Ill give MOTM to Mendes mostly because i dont want to give it to Ronaldo for personal reasons, and besides those two goals he didnt really do much of worth at all.
